Boy, it sure looks like fun to live and travel in a tiny house, more spacious than most RV’s, and certainly more cool.  We visited a tiny house show in San Jose this last weekend and share a bit of our experiences.  This week is also when KSCO’s morning host, Rosemary Chalmers, visited CERN and we have an update on the CERN upgrades and a couple minutes of Rosie’s report from the high tech facility in Switzerland. We also explore a new way to create a breathable Martian atmosphere and ponder a huge mysterious gravity wave on Venus.

Also this week is our interview with John Draper, aka ‘Captain Crunch,’ grandfather of the hackers, who regales us with a few tales from his biography, “Beyond the Blue Box,” written with Craig Wilson. We touched on some especially interesting tales from the time when the iron curtain collapsed and John was on the front lines of the shift, visiting East Berlin when,for a period of several weeks, there was no government at all.. We catch up with the Captain after he has sustained some serious back surgery in Las Vegas and is recuperating.  What does the grandfather of  computer hacking have to say about the Russian exploits of the US Election process? John also gives us some great tips on protecting our privacy, like what apps to use, and regales us with some of his favorite tales with the founders of Apple Computer, Woz and Jobs. 

Plus there is the earlier story of his witnessing an above ground nuclear blast in the Nevada desert in the early 1960’s, a particularly memorable event. This and many other stories are in his just about to be published biography, “Beyond the Little Blue Box, co-written with  Craig Wilson Fraser.

John also gives us an update on his physical condition, which has been subject to some complex back surgery of late, and his hacking of the medical system, especially in finding online info that can aid in his recovery.  A unique explorer at the intersection of technology and the human spirit, we think you’ll both learn from and enjoy listening to the ‘Captain.’  And if you can find it in your heart to contribute to his medical recovery fund, that would be insanely great..

This week we feature our interview with John Draper, aka Captain Crunch, a well-known American computer hacker and friend, who shares with us previously unknown vulnerabilities of the global cell phone network, specifically the SS7 Signaling System, which dates back 40 years, before the Internet and modern day telecommunications.  

John also shares info on the best apps to use on your smart phone for secure encrypted communications, especially Signal, from Open Whisper Systems.  We also delve into election voting fraud and John shares a personal story that may have bigger implications.. Enjoy!

Last week was quite hard for two private space companies, Orbital Sciences Corporation, with the loss of their Antares rocket, and the crash of Virgin Galactic’s Space Ship Two.  Unfortunately, one of the pilots on Space Ship Two lost his life, a local son, Michael Alsbury, from Scott’s Valley, California.  Very sad.  

It’s looks like we are learning lots about teaching our robots how to run from studying running birds, especially turkeys.. As long as I’m not being chased by a velociraptor!  You’ll enjoy this segment, based on research found in this article.

Nuclear fusion had entered the headlines this week, because of an announcement from Lockheed’s famous Skunkworks, promising a working prototype within five years. We’ll see…

Meanwhile, Captain Crunch (aka John Draper) called in and gave us an update about what went on at Defcon, a major hacker gathering in Las Vegas.  He confirmed that fake cell phone towers are out there and working, cast doubt about electronic voting, and asked you all for help.  He is recovering from a serious back operation, an attempt to repair damage done by the mafia to him for refusing to give them the correct codes of his magical blue box, a 70’s device that allowed free long distance phone calls.  He’s been suffering a long time, and finally he is finding some relief.  Click here to read about his effort to raise the money for his operation and recovery expenses.
